Gimble
(GIM-bul)

Race: Dwarf
Role: Bosun of the Copper Horizon

The first thing Gorrell tells new arrivals about Gimble is don’t stare. It’s good advice, and most people fail to take it.

Gimble is a stocky dwarf with long auburn hair and what can only be described as half a beard. The left side is well-kept and drawn together near its end with a bright green silk tie, trimmed flat just above his considerable gut. The right side of his face is something else entirely — a mass of severe burn scars that left that side completely hairless, taking his right eyebrow, a portion of his hair, and his right eye with it. He wears a patch over the missing eye. The contrast between the two sides of his face is jarring in a way that is difficult to look away from, which is exactly why Gorrell tells people not to. There is almost always an unlit cheroot in his mouth and a bottle within arm’s reach, and his single good eye is sharp enough to make up for the one he lost.

As Bosun of the Copper Horizon, Gimble is responsible for the crew and the day-to-day running of the ship, and he is exceptionally good at it — gruff, direct, and entirely unsentimental about what needs to be done. He has a gravelly voice that carries across a deck without effort and an authority born not from rank but from the simple fact that he has forgotten more about ships and sailing than most people will ever learn. He does not suffer fools. He does not extend warmth easily. And he will spit a mouthful of whatever he is drinking directly into your face if he catches you staring.

What lies beneath the hard exterior is considerably more complicated — a history stretching back over two hundred years, a grief and a sense of betrayal that has never fully healed, and a loyalty that, once given, is absolute. He has his reasons for being the way he is. Those reasons are not small.

Interesting Facts:

  • His war hammer has the symbol of Edhos on its head — or what used to be the symbol. It has been defaced almost beyond recognition. He has carried it for over two hundred years. He has never explained why he kept it.
  • The green silk tie on his beard is the only deliberately careful thing about his appearance. He has never mentioned it to anyone.
