Ethiss (EE-this)

Title: The Lady of Shadows

Role: Fallen Goddess of Poisons, Lies, Shadows, and Pestilence

There are villains, and then there is Ethiss. The Lady of Shadows is not the kind of threat that announces itself with armies or open war. She is patient, calculated, and utterly without mercy — a goddess who has always preferred to operate from the dark, letting others take the blows while she strikes from places no one thinks to look.

Her appearance is difficult to pin down precisely, which feels appropriate. What people notice first is not a feature so much as a feeling — a predatory stillness, a cold that seems to follow her, a tendency for firelight to flinch rather than illuminate her face. Her movements are fluid and unhurried, her voice smooth and ancient, equally capable of warmth and venom, sometimes both at once. She is cruel in the way only someone truly patient can be: she takes her time, she chooses her words carefully, and she enjoys watching her cruelty land.

Once a member of the divine pantheon, Ethiss was stripped of nearly all her power and banished to walk the mortal world of Thanria following the events of the God Rain — a punishment handed down for crimes against her fellow gods. She cannot return to the divine realm. She cannot die. She is simply… here. Diminished, humiliated, and waiting. Which, if you know anything about Ethiss, should frighten you considerably more than if she were at full strength.

Interesting Facts:

  • Ethiss prefers to call herself an opportunist rather than a coward. Whether that distinction holds up under scrutiny is a matter of perspective.
  • Even some of the other gods feared her — which says something, given the company she kept.
  • Ethiss’s symbol is a serpent’s tongue dripping poison.
