Bevan Bluestone has spent over sixty years working with gemstones, and it shows — not in any stiffness or pretension, but in the way he handles a stone. He picks it up the way other people might hold something irreplaceable and alive, turning it slowly, watching how light moves through it, entirely lost in the process for a moment before remembering there are other people in the room. His dark, weathered hands are the hands of a craftsman, and they have forgotten more about precious stones than most jewelers will ever learn.

He is warm in the unhurried way of someone who has earned the right to move at his own pace. He insists on first names, deflects formality with gentle humor, and has a gift for making guests feel immediately comfortable in his home — which is itself a reflection of the man, meticulous and organized but never cold, filled with the tools of his trade displayed with obvious pride. He is spry for his age, quick to move around a desk to greet someone properly, and possessed of an enthusiasm that surfaces immediately when something genuinely excites him. His granddaughter Mauran describes it as being like a child waiting for festival morning. He does not deny this.

He has built something significant over a lifetime — a name, a business, a family — and he wears all of it with quiet satisfaction rather than ostentation. The Bluestone name means something in Indurisin, and Bevan knows it, but he has never needed it to define him personally. His grandson Dev walking away from that name to make his own way is something Bevan has always privately respected, even if he has not always said so directly.

• In sixty years of handling gemstones, Bevan had never seen Kuldirite — and when he finally held a piece in his hands, he went nearly silent for a long moment, which those who know him understand to be the most reverent response he is capable of.
• He is the only person in the world who calls his grandson by his full given name — Devontious. He says the full name suits him better than anything else.
